And I Did Feel Cultural Change
Moving
from Nepal to the United States was on of the most exciting decisions
that I have ever made; however, I always wanted to come here in the
United States. When I first came here, I did find many differences
whether it was about culture or climate, people or their thinking
styles. Everything was different from my country where I came from.
Although there were lots of differences, I was not surprised because
I had done much researches about American culture. Even I had
conversation with many people from the United States through
Internet, and that helped me a lot to understand their habits and
behavior. I was able to find some similarities between the Nepalese
people and the American people, but there were some differences too.
The
first thing that I have noticed when I first came here was
informality and frankness for example, you can say, “hey man,
what's up” to an old man without any respect or formality, but In
Nepal, we have different level of language that shows respect for
people specially for the old persons. It show friendly and openness
of American culture. I have changed my language to little friendly
way and now I frankly meet and talk with them; however, I still have
my own culture inside me .
Time
is money; everyone here is busy, and most of the people don't have
time to meet people and talk with them. However in Nepal we had much
spare time that is due to our time management skills or we never been
so busy in work I don't know exactly. People here think differently
about time, and they make time for everything they love, but the
amount of time is little because nobody here have extra time for
anything not even for themselves. I have gained some time management
skills and I turned into American air-- American culture--.
Once, I
was taking the bus, E line from Aurora Village to Downtown, and I was
seated then I saw an old man standing. Suddenly, I offered him my
seat, but he refused to sit. I was surprised because in my culture we
offer an old person the seat first, and we take seat if it is not
occupied.
I
noticed that person traveled from Shoreline to Seattle downtown on
his feet. I realized that Americans people like pretend t be
independent. I like his spirit of American people , but if someone
respect you and offer you a seat on the bus you should take that
because its shows that you respect other, and you will not be
dependent just by taking a seat that is offered by other people. I
did consider that event as one of the annoying moments of my life in
the United States.
In the
United States, people do respect your work. It does not matter what
type of work you do, but how good you are at that job, and how do you
perform it, only matters. I do really love this concept or value if
American culture because I personally think that people should love
whatever they do, and I do always respect those people who work hard.
Of
course, every culture have its own good and as well as the bad sides
even my culture have some good and bad sides, so does American
culture do. I am trying to learn new and better parts of American
culture, and I do follow good parts of Nepalese culture. I am pretty
much surprised by some cultural practices of American culture at the
first time, but now I am used to of those cultural practices.
In my
point of view, developing your own culture that helps you to be a
good person is really important. A part from that, adopting new
culture is hard but when you will come here in the United States you
will slowly turn into the vibrant American culture, but always keep
in mind that every culture have good as well as bad sides, and every
culture is different , so do respect each-other's culture.
